Daddy's Peanut Butter Delights

Was wanting something sweet today and had just enough ingredients to make... nothing.  Was missing one thing for almost every recipe I had on my mind.  Except for this: Peanut Butter Delights.  You probably have the same or similar recipe, lots of times you'll see them called No Bake Cookies, but this is just about the only thing my Daddy can (or rather, will) cook and he calls them Peanut Butter Delights.  Works for me.  The only thing missing in the picture below is Daddy standing there with a spoon eating them before they set!

Peanut Butter Delights, Robert F. Naylor

• 2 c sugar
• 1/3 c cocoa
• 1 stick margarine 
• 1/2 c milk 
• 1 pt oatmeal (2 cups)
• 1/2 c peanut butter 
• 1/2 c raisins, opt.

Mix sugar and cocoa together.  In a medium saucepan, melt margarine.  Add milk and sugar mixture.  Cook over medium-high heat until mixture begins to bubble around the pan.  Cook additional minute (if cooked too long, candy will be dry).  Remove from heat, add peanut butter, oatmeal and raisins if desired.  Let mixture cool slightly in pan.  Spoon onto waxed paper into 2 in cookies.

Sweet girl

We got some hand-me-downs from our cousin yesterday and this toy was one of them.  I can't believe we've had 3 kids and never bought one of these walker things - especially as much as my kids love them!  Naylor and Lalon played with it all last night, but they are in school today and Whitley Ann is loving it.  Check out all those teeth too; the top and bottom two are through and then the two on either side of top centers are working their way down.

We've been in the house for what seems like FOREVER, but really, maybe 5 days - aside from our ER visit of course...  Someone has been sick or the weather gross and we just haven't ventured out.  Heading to the Bouncy House place now to use up some groupons and burn off lots of energy!  Here's a picture of the girls in their super sweet outfits from Aunt Christie and Uncle Jamie from Christmas.

Thankful

Tonight as the kids and I sat down to dinner, I quickly stopped them from digging in to say the blessing.  We've gotten extremely lazy around here and lost almost all of our good habits, so back to basics.

As I got my hands ready and waited for them to do the same, Naylor quickly followed.  Usually, I'll just say "God is great..." and when I'm done they'll say, "Amen.".  Tonight, Naylor took the initiative to say the blessing for us.  He said, "Dear Jesus, thank you for our friends.  Amen." and then Lalon said, "The end.".

Somehow it works.

Lucky Day!

Naylor just went to the potty and THANKFULLY (because he's quick on the draw when it comes to flushing), he yelled out to me, "Mommy, I'm going to stinky that battery out now!".  Thanks for the heads up little man, thanks.

I say it's my lucky day because, well if you don't like to talk about poop, quit reading.  Anyway, it wasn't the largest bowel movement I've ever seen Naylor take and we hit the jackpot.  No, not any gold in there, but I did find one button battery on our first try.  Whew!  Now we can move on to our next adventure, whatever it may be!

Here's a picture of the battery and the beating it took in Naylor's stomach... that's a bit frightening how strong the stomach acid is... The one on the left is one I found on the floor this morning, the one on the right came from Naylor (all cleaned).  Luckily, I was thinking and grabbed some of the gloves from the exam room we were in yesterday before leaving the hospital.

Battery follow-up

Per our ER discharge orders we've scheduled a follow-up appointment with our pediatrician for Thursday afternoon (nicely timed with Whitley Ann's ear infection follow-up appointment).  I've also spoken with the radiology department to pick up his x-rays tomorrow for our pediatrician appointment.  The nurse from the dr's office called this morning to make sure Naylor was doing okay - he's as fine as he can be.  I haven't spoken with the National Battery Ingestion Hotline folks yet, but expecting their call today.

No poop yet, so nothing to report on that front.

Also, I found the culprit.  Yesterday, he had brought the battery to me, although I wasn't sure where he got it and I told him it was not good and I put it up on the counter.  A few minutes after that, he returned to say that battery was in his mouth...  This morning, when I was cleaning, I saw TWO more of the same kind of battery on the floor.  SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!  So apparently, Lalon's Cinderella wand / flashlight thing takes 3 of those button batteries.  I've never had to change them so I didn't know.  Looks like the battery flap (that is held in with a screw) just popped off when someone dropped it and the 3 batteries popped out.  When I got it all up, I checked the wand and it did have a picture for 3 batteries and how they go in.  Luckily there were two on the floor and the third one is in Naylor, so I'm going to just count that as a blessing.  So happy to find 2 batteries and not have to wonder / take Lalon and Whitley Ann in for x-rays to see if they had ingested the other two.

Thank goodness Brian gets home from his 5 day snowboarding trip in Vail, CO tonight around 10pm.  Sheesh.  Longest.  Weekend.  Ever.

Batteries not included...

So, today Naylor had a small button / watch battery (I have no idea where got it), but he brought it to me and I told him he couldn't have it and it may get on the floor and Whitley Ann would eat it and get bad boo-boos and I took it and put on the counter.  Well, in a few minutes he told me the battery was in his mouth - looked around and couldn't find it, so started our adventure for the day...  

Well, we ran on over to the WakeMed Pediatric ER and they were quite friendly.  We were through triage and back in a room pretty quickly.  Believe it or not, we were actually in the same room Robert Ashley was in almost 8 years ago when he broke his wrist while ice skating (incidentally Brian and I were engaged the next day; maybe I'll get another nice diamond after this ER adventure).



Had 3 x-rays done and the doctor confirmed that there was indeed a battery in Naylor's stomach.  He said it was sitting pretty and if you were going to swallow a battery (which he advised not to be doing), it was as nicely placed as you could ask.  Since it wasn't in his esophagus, we dodged a bullet there and were able to go home.  Now, I get the fun, fun job of checking his business to see if/when it passes.  So, now we're in a hurry up and wait situation.  As long as he doesn't get any belly aches / vomit kind of stuff going on, we have the green light to just keep doing what we're doing (aside from eating batteries of course).


Oh, and here's a fun fact for the day... did you know there's a National Battery Ingestion Hotline?? Neither did I. But I do now and they'll be calling daily until the "foreign object" has been retrieved, cleaned and sent to them. That's right, sent to them. The battery companies are very interested in how their pieces react within the human body and study them when they are able to adjust their products accordingly. We are hoping this comes out within 4 days or we have to return for follow-up x-rays to see where it has moved... so here's to a poop party at our house!

We went and picked the girls up from the drop off place and grabbed some McDonald's and everyone is happily eating now.  I just got a giant Diet Coke because I had some leftover pizza here.  Thinking about topping that soda off with a splash of Crown Royal...  

Back home, happy as can be.

Now that I'm home, kids are in bed and I'm reflecting, I'm SO GLAD we went to the pediatric ER... it was nothing but a thing today, just like a dr's office visit and Naylor was totally fine. Maybe a little too fine that it didn't scare him enough not to do it again. Anyhow... in hindsight, I guess I'm just grateful we weren't in a regular old ER with folks that have cut their finger off or been shot or something else gruesome that would scar him for life or scare him unnecessarily from going to the doctor's office.

So grateful it wasn't any more than it was - lots of "what if's" and "could have's", but I'm just going to say a grateful prayer for what we're dealing with and move on.

Well I partly haven't been blogging because I'm always checking out or doing a pinterest project.  My friend Rikki got me on to it and I've found so many neat ideas / recipes / stuff / etc...!  So, we've done a few and I have a good old wish list, just waiting for an occasion that I can say, "yes please, I'd like that!".  :)
